Day Break…
We are what was left of a rag tag group of hikers who have survived the first days of the ‘’invasion’’ we were camping at a popular mountain spot when we receive the news that something is happening in the low lands that something is attacking the villagers. The local authority who relayed the message to us said that we must stay in our camps and turn the radio and listen to the new. All we could hear in the FM stations is that something is attacking them and the police have a hard time controlling the situation and that the military was also mobilized, one thing that puzzles me is that the stations we were listening caters to music and that every music station is broadcasting news. Not even one mobile phone present had an AM signal.
Then suddenly all communications was lost, no network signal present, even the radio stations broadcasted a replay, a warning that instructs anyone to is listening to go to the nearest police or military detachment or stay indoors, nothing more…
Our group decided to pack-up camp and assess our food supplies, some were crying on why this is happening, why is there no communications, no news and that the only voice heard are warning us not to venture to populated areas and that we must seek police and military detachments or strongly stay indoors. There is something happening and we are blind venturing back to the nearest civilization. A small group of men volunteered to go ahead and check out the situation before the main group descended, good thing there was a walkie-talkie present, a good 10 mile radius string of communication. Armed with only ample supplies and small knives, the ‘’recon’’ group hastily paced to the jungle, they have 3 to 4 hours left before they reach the nearest settlement then suddenly in the clearing of the jungle they found smoke rising above the houses below then as they scan the horizon, they could also see more smoking houses and fire raging as if someone has poured gasoline to the already open flame.
They heard footsteps, knives on the ready, ready for anything they might encounter…
A group of old looking men came with their guns, hunting rifles with the look at their types pointed at the group of men that came from the camp site. “Who are you??!!!’’ replied one hunter and the group of men answered back, “We are the ones who are camping in the mountain, what is happening???”
“Didn’t you hear the news? Something is attacking us and other parts of the country, the police and the military is overrun but we heard news that those in the highlands were not attacked only those who were in the low lands and in the main cities” replied the hunter again.
They radioed back, they told us they were coming back and with some local hunters, they have some bad news and they refused to tell us on the radio. We waited for them for an hour or so. As we saw the arrival of the hunters and our “companions’’ they told us the news and that we must stay at camp until we settled the matter and that contact from the lowlands has been established. The hunters were kind to us and even cooked and shared their kill for our supplies are running low, good thing a water source is nearby and water was not a problem.
It was already nightfall, we have now worked on a schedule on who will be up and keeping watch of the camp. A hunter and two hikers were the first watch and after 3 hours another hunter and two hikers will take their watch.
We have not heard yet of new news regarding the situation, we have turned off our mobile phones and radio to conserve power. We are still wondering what happened, wondering how our love ones are doing, wondering if they would still be work, wondering if everyone we knew are still alive…
Then a faint network signal was present without hesitations I immediately wrapped things up with the final words and hoping that the one bar signal can transmit my message…
We have survived for now. Anyone who reads this, please reply that you are okay and that help is on the way. My name is Maj and I shall be closing my mobile phone and check my post the following day. We have ample supplies left that could last for a day or two if anyone there is reading… please reply.
For you are only our hope……
